Chayiliyam celebrates the various shades of red in the feminine, through the rebellion of Gauri and her assertion and rediscovery of her femininity. Set in North Malabar, Kerala, the film draws from the orgasmic performative energy of Theyyam, the ritual performance in which gods and goddesses, and the valiant dead come to life in vibrant forms and figures. Chayiliam draws its narrative energy and form from various aspects of Theyyam performance: its roots in the legends and collective unconscious, myths about female goddesses, the costumes, penances, dance movements, chanting and rituals that accompany it. The movie was screened at IFFK 2012, Chennai International Film Festival (Indian Panorama), Cochin International Film Festival, Bengaluru International Film Festival (Indian Cinema Competition) and Delhi International Film Festival (International Competition). It has also received Best Debut Indian Director Award at IFFK 2012 and Special Jury Award at John Abraham awards 2012 for Best Malayalam film.
